Pedal Building and modification

Web Design

I've been building websites since I was about 8 years old. Thank goodness I've gotten better since I was 8 though! Here are a couple of examples. Click on the picture to go to the actual website.

This website was built to help the guys over at Jukebox Jordan market their idea of creating songs for people who want a full band track behind them. This is useful for anyone who can't pull off playing several different instruments, and would like some help putting their idea into full song.

This website was built for J Ace J studios. J Ace J is a full service studio serving all types of needs in the Menlo Park, CA area. Recording, mixing, post-productions, anything you might need in relation to sound production! This is also the studio where I do a lot of my work, so I'm very partial to these guys. Please note, this site is not live yet. I will update the link once it's up and running.

Live and Studio Sound Engineering

I've been doing live sound since I was about 14 years old, and working in recording arts since I was 17 or 18. Here's a couple of samples of some recordings I've either played on, recorded, or mixed.

This track was actually done at a jam my buddy Geno used to put together called the "Unity Jam" where our church musicians were invited along with some great musicians from a local gospel church to get together, shed, and learn from each other. Awesome time! I'm playing bass on this track, A-plus on drums, Larry on keys, Geno on organ, and Jim on guitar.

This track was a quickie recording thing for a buddy of mine who needed it done ASAP to give as a gift. From start to finish was about an hour and a half. Not bad for that short of an amount of time, recording in my home office!

Last but not least is a track from my old band, Fessenden. This track was recorded, along with 5 others in one weekend. It was recorded at SCP Studios, which is owned by my good friend and former bandmate, Jordan. The final production layout was done by Daniel Larson, and the mixing was done by me.

More to come soon!

Instrument repair and modification

I have had the pleasure to work on some fantastic instruments for friends of mine as well as clients of all ages and skill levels.

This guitar belongs to my good friend Steve. He got it from his cousin for $75. When I got the guitar, it was an ugly red color, and had residue from stickers all over it. To be honest, it was a mess, and a hard guitar to play. I took it, stripped off the finish and refinished it with a nice Tung Oil to let the natural grain of the mahogany shine through. It was a long process, but came out looking great! Click the picture of the guitar to go to the gallery.

Strats are some of my favorite guitars, and this guy happens to belong to Chris P. Chris wanted a strat that both looked AND played well. There's a great site that sells some nice Fender knock offs for decently low amounts of money. This guitar is a limited edition, but still could use some tweaking to make it great. I took and stripped the heavy, ugly finish off the neck and refinished it with tung oil. As far as the electronics are concerned, I put in "super strat" wiring which uses toggles rather than a 5 way switch, that allows you to turn on any of the 4 pickups in any combination, at any time, as well as use them out of phase if you desire. This turned out to be a great guitar. Chris seems to be a happy camper!

Pedal Building and Modification

I love electronics. I love tinkering with them, building things, and modifying things. Most of the time, I gravitate towords effect pedals, since I and my friends use them more than anything else. Here are a few projects I've completed.

The "Big Black Box" is a modified Electro-Harmonix Russian Big Muff. I swapped out a few components to make it a little more bass friendly, swapped it so the input and output are on the "correct" sides to make it easier to fit on a pedalboard, and swapped out the stock Red LED for a green one. I then recovered the pedal in black tape, and swapped out the knobs for some nice big ones! This pedal has been sold to a guy from Talkbass.com.

Next up is a modified Line 6 DL4 delay modeler. The DL4 is one of those pedals you see on TONS of pedalboards, spanning most styles of music. This pedal has a ton of modifications. First off. I replaced the original switches, which are mounted on the PCB and people have had tons of problems with the switches not working after a lot of play time. This now has hard wired switches, which work great and are a lot more reliable.

I also changed out two resistors on the pedal. These pedals are notorious for having a drop in volume when the effect is engaged. By changing out these resistors, it eliminates the volume drop.

Last but not least is the "Double Preset" modification. With these pedals, you can take one of the presets and use an expression pedal to toggle between two settings of the same preset. For example, take a digital delay + mod and with the heel down on the expression pedal, set it to have lots of repeats with a slight chorus, and with the toe down, have less repeats with a lush chorus. It's a cool modification, and allows you to use just the switch mounted at the top. For a good demo of this mod, check out THIS VIDEO

I've also built and modified many other pedals, and there are a lot that go through my hands. Please contact me if you'd like something changed around a bit to make it more what you'd like out of your gear.
